What are Threaded Pipe Fittings? Similarity Between Socket Weld Pipe Fittings and Threaded Pipe Fittings.

Threaded fittings are normally made of cast gray or malleable iron, cast brass or bronze, or forged alloy and carbon steel. They are available in three pressure ratings: Class 2000, 3000 and 6000. At the smallest sizes, the amount of wall lost during threading actually equals approximately 55% of the original pipe wall.

Socket weld and Threaded Pipe Fittings are forged product and classified based on its pressure-temperature rating. Socket weld & Threaded end fittings are available from NPS 1/8” to 4”. These fittings are available in four pressure-temperature rating class.

What are the Disadvantages of Threaded Pipe Fittings?

  • In hazardous piping systems threaded connections should be avoided, if possible. Their vulnerability to fatigue damage is significant, especially where exposed threads are subject to corrosion.
  • Rapid temperature changes may lead to leaks due to differential thermal expansion between the pipe and fittings.
  • Vibration can result in fatigue failures of screwed pipe joints due to the high stress intensification effects caused by the sharp notches at the base of the threads.

Difference Between Socket Weld Pipe Fittings and Threaded Fittings

  1. Socket weld fittings are used for applications where strong and long-lasting connections are required.  Socket weld fittings are very reliable but are time-consuming to install in a piping system (due to the heavy workload caused by welding operations on small parts). Threaded fittings are used for less-critical piping systems, such as water distribution, fire protection, and cooling, or for low-pressure installations not subject to vibration, elongation and bending forces. Threaded pipe fittings are not suited for fluids with constantly changing temperatures, as sudden changes may crack the connection.
  2. Socket weld fittings are connected to pipes by fillet welds, whereas threaded fittings are screwed onto the pipe or vice-versa.

Difference Between Malleable Iron Fittings and Threaded Forged Pipe Fittings

A malleable iron fitting is used for light industrial application, plumbing application. These threaded fittings have a high pressure rating, they are made out of a forged steel. One big difference is that malleable iron fitting is not very good with welding whereas, threaded fitting, you can weld. Again, this is a threaded fitting, but depending on your application, if there is a requirement to weld it, then you would be better off using a forged carbon steel. Also, malleable iron fitting come in 150 pound, 300 pound rating which you can make a comparison, much lower, whereas a threaded fitting come in a 3000 and 6000 pound pressure rating.

  1. Caliper – A caliper is a useful tool that measures the outside diameter of a male thread and inside diameter of a female thread. Using a caliper will give you the most accurate and precise measurements, but a straight steel ruler is a good alternative.

Pipe size is quoted as a “Nominal Pipe Size” or NPS. The origin of the NPS numbers for smaller pipes (< NPS 12) is different to the origin for larger diameter pipes. However, all pipes of a specific NPS number have the same external or outer diameter (OD). The internal diameter will vary depending on the wall thickness of the metal. The reason for this is so that the same structural supports can be used for all piping of a specific NPS number regardless of the wall thickness.

Schedules

Steel pipe schedules are a way to describe the wall thickness of the pipe. This is a critical parameter as it is directly related to the strength of the pipe and the suitability for specific applications. A pipe schedule is a dimensionless number and is calculated based on the design formula for wall thickness, given the design pressure and allowable stress.

Examples of schedule numbers are as follows: 5, 5S, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160, STD, XS, and XXS—with the most common being schedules 40 and 80. As the schedule number increases, the wall thickness of the pipe increases. The schedule number of a pipe therefore defines the internal diameter, as the OD is fixed by the NPS number.
