What is a Alloy Steel Buttweld Pipe Fitting?

A butt weld pipe fitting is a type of pipe fitting, which is designed to be welded on site to connect pipes together. Welding of a buttweld pipe fitting to pipes or other fittings is generally done to allow change in direction of the piping system.

Buttweld fittings are generally identified or inquired in nominal pipe sizes with specified pipe schedule. Buttweld fitting’s dimensions and tolerances are defined as per ASME B16.9 standard. All buttweld pipe fittings have beveled ends as per ASME B16.25 standard. This helps create full penetration weld without any extra preparation needed for the butt weld fitting.

Advantages of Alloy Steel Buttweld Pipe Fitting

-Welding butt weldable fitting to a piping system, ensures a 100% leak proof connection.
-The piping system which uses a buttweld fittings requires less space.
-The continuous metal structure formed due to welding of a buttweld fitting to pipes gives enough strength to the system.
-Smooth inner surface and gradual direction results in lower pressure loss, and lower corrosion or abrasion resistance.

Types of Alloy Steel Buttweld Pipe Fitting

-Butt Weld Pipe Elbow
-Butt Weld Pipe Bend
-Butt Weld Steel Pipe Tee
-Butt Weld Steel Pipe Reducer
-Butt Weld Pipe End Cap

Manufacturing Process For Alloy Steel Buttweld Pipe Fitting

The most appropriate manufacturing method of a product will be decided with consideration of its material, sizes, shape, use, standards and other properties. A butt weld pipe fitting is made by the process of hot forming that includes bending and forming to shape. The starting material of butt weld fitting is a pipe that is cut to length, heated and molded into specific shapes by means of dyes. Heat treatment is also done to remove residual stresses and obtain desired mechanical properties.

Mandrel method (Hot Forming) – The principal methods of hot working are extrusion, drawing, forging and rolling. Rolling is the most extensive employed forming process, though some limitations may apply to the process.

Effects of Alloying Elements on Steel

•Manganese – strength and hardness; decreases ductility and weldability; effects hardenability of steel.
•Phosphorus – increases strength and hardness and decreases ductility and notch impact toughness of steel.
•Sulfur decreases ductility and notch impact toughness Weldability decreases. Found in the form of sulfide inclusions.
•Silicon – one of the principal deoxidizers used in steel making. In low-carbon steels, silicon is generally detrimental to surface quality.
•Copper – detrimental to hot-working steels; beneficial to corrosion resistance (Cu>0.20%).
•Nickel – ferrite strengthener; increases the hardenability and impact strength of steels.
•Molybdenum –  increases the hardenability; enhances the creep resistance of low-alloy steels.

How are Steel Pipes Certified?

Certification of Steel Pipes

Manufacturers issue a Material Test Report or Mill Test Report to validate that the product meets the chemical analysis and mechanical properties specification. The MTR will contain all relevant data to the product and will accompany the product through its lifecycle.

The following are typical parameters that may be recorded on an MTR:

  • Chemical composition including carbon content, alloys, and sulfur
  • Material size, weight, identification, and grade
  • Material heat number, which ties back to the processing batch
  • Mechanical properties like tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation

At Metallica, we will Provide you with Original MTR’s for all Alloy Steel Pipe Products! We will Send Our Test Certificates, along with Quotation
