Features of ASTM A519 Carbon and Alloy Steel Mechanical Tubes

  • ASTM A519 specification covers both seamless hot-finished mechanical tubing and seamless cold-finished mechanical tubing.
  • This specification covers several grades of carbon and alloy steel seamless mechanical tubing.
  • The steel may be made by any process. Steel may be cast in ingots or may be strand cast. When steel of different grades is sequentially strand cast, identification of the resultant transition material is required. The producer shall remove the transition material by an established procedure that positively separates the grades. Heat treatment is carried out separately and in addition to hot forming.
  • The tubes shall be furnished in the following shapes, as specified: round, square, rectangular, and special sections.
  • Flattening Test – One flattening test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flaring test, from each lot.
  • Flaring Test – One flaring test shall be made on specimens from each end of one finished tube, not the one used for the flattening test, from each lot.
  • Hydrostatic or Nondestructive Electric Test – Each tube shall be subjected to the nondestructive electric test or the hydrostatic test. The type of test to be used shall be at the option of the manufacturer, unless otherwise specified in the purchase order.
